The cable itself is straight through and no special drivers are required. Where many K1 cables have the USB UART chip in the USB connector, the TYT has the chip inside the radio. Although its appearance is that of a K1 Kenwood style programming cable where the UART chip is in the USB connector, it is Not compatible. "The MD-380 & MD-UV380 use a 2 pin programming cable. The way I've seen it work is the TYT cable is just a wire basically and the interface is inside the radio, whereas the Baofeng cable includes the interface. I was trying to relate that I had this same situation with other radios and obviously went too far with that issue. And I am using the supplied software that came with the radio. The important point is-I have swapped radios and cables (All TYT) and nothing works. The manual is terrible! Simply reading it makes my head hurt! I would make a joke about English as a 2nd language but they are nowhere near that good. I don't even keep the wifi on if I'm not updating Fldigi or JS8-Call or something of the like. I don't go anywhere (even here) where I would enter a password-never did. It may not be supported anymore, but I have nothing of actual value on the windows laptop.

What do I try next? I really don't want a windows 10 platform in order to rule out my laptop, as it's notorious for resetting renaming all your drivers when it updates as just one of it's many problems. That may or may not be relevant to this situation, but that's where I'm at. the Big Three) I buy RT systems software and I have never had an issue with Windows 7 and RT systems in conjunction with Icom or Yaesu.

I don't use them much I got them for future projects like a packet station or a portable VHF fldigi radio when used in combination with a Pi. As I think was(is?) common, the cable that came with the baofengs didn't work, so after I bought a better USB cable I was eventually able to make things work. I vaguely remember having to load an older version of Chrip to make it work with the recommended USB cable for the baofeng radios. I'm running windows 7 on a laptop I bought refurbished in 2016 when I was initially licensed, since most Ham software won't work on my Mac. I even tried the cable that I know works with my Baofengs. I've tried combinations of two different cables and radios and I get an error message each time saying make sure the cable and or radio is connected. Besides who needs a really needs a reason to get another HT? Well, just like when I went the cheaper chinese radio route (Baofeng) trying to even get the software and radio to talk with each other is my first hurdle. I bought a few TYT MD-UV380s from MTC to see how I liked the radio, and if they worked, well, maybe go the route mentioned here of getting a business license (I do own a farm, and then there is my day J O B) so that encryption would then be a legal option. Insert rant about wasting more time figuring out computers (read windows ) than using software or the radio.
